The Biden administration's plan to discharge student loan debt from qualifying individuals has received a lot of attention and varied reactions. Speaking to HuffPost, Professor Robert Lawless explained that student loans, however, have historically been much more challenging for borrowers to discharge, as bankruptcy has not relieved those individuals of student loan debts. With overall levels of student loan debt reaching more than $1.6 trillion, the courts have shown a little more willingness to help borrowers, but the new debt relief plan marks the biggest step toward helping these individuals in decades.
