When Politico shared a leak of Justice Samuel Alito's opinion striking down Roe v. Wade it sent shockwaves throughout the United States. The text of the opinion, of course, would have monumental impact on healthcare and law across the country, but the leak itself is also quite stunning. Chief Justice John Roberts described the leak, which has no precedent in Supreme Court history, in a statement as a “betrayal of the confidence of the court.” Roberts also tasked the Marshal of the Supreme Court with launching an investigation into the source of the leak.
The current marshal is Gail Curley, the 11th in the history of the court and second woman to fill the position. Curley came to the job in June of 2021 after a career as an Army lawyer. Curley earned her J.D. in 1999 at the University of Illinois College of Law.
