Professor Jacob Sherkow presented "Patents as Governance for Human Genome Editing" at the University of Oxford (via Zoom) on December 1. The talk focused on ways patents and patent licensing are used (and could be used) as governance instruments for human genome editing. Sherkow provided a brief introduction to the main tool of gene editing, CRISPR/cas9 which has itself been subject to a long running patent dispute. He also discussed some mechanics and concerns of the patent instrument as a governance tool.
