Professor Jorge Lemus's paper, "Antitrust Limits on Patent Settlements: A New Approach" (co-authored with Eric Hovenkamp of Harvard University), was named a Best Academic Article by the Antitrust Writing Awards. The Best Articles winners are selected based on "writing, scholarship, originality, practical relevance and the contribution they make to competition advocacy" by a jury of more than 60 highly qualified individuals.
The award-winning paper, which is forthcoming in the Journal of Industrial Economics, makes the case that patent settlements restrain competition. Additionally, Lemus presents a framework to determine whether settlement outcomes will be antitrust-compliant for any private beliefs the firms might have.
