Since graduating from the College of Law in 2013, Chase Means has been working at Foley & Lardner LLP in Madison, Wisconsin. Focusing in patent law, he was approached by a former partner in the firm with an idea – develop a keyboard that is specifically designed for attorneys, by attorneys, called the LegalBoard. They co-founded Pro-Boards, LLC, with Means as the co-founder, product tester, and first investor in the company.
The LegalBoard is a keyboard designed to switch into legal mode with the press of a single key. The product has keys specifically for §, ¶, and © symbols; insert common legal vernacular such as "plaintiff," "defendant," "id;" adjust caps, underline, italics, or bold; and more. After debuting the LegalBoard at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the keyboard already has pre-orders in 48 states as well as D.C., and attorneys in five other countries have contacted the company to discuss adapting the product for use in their markets.
Means and his partner have high hopes for their premiere product: "We want to become the standard in the legal industry." They are also looking to expand Pro-Boards, LLC into other products, as well. Wireless and ergonomic versions of the LegalBoard have been discussed, along with plans to expand the LegalBoard concept into other industries with specialized data processing needs such as the medical and accounting fields.
