Last week, the News-Gazette spoke to local religious leaders to find out how they have handled or plan to handle situations involving undocumented immigrants seeking sanctuary. Professor Jason Mazzone weighed in from a legal perspective.
"Officers with a warrant can enter a church, synagogue, mosque or other place of worship to arrest an individual in the same way they can enter a private home," Mazzone says. "In addition, it is a federal criminal offense to knowingly harbor an undocumented immigrant in any place; those doing so potentially face prosecution."
So far, the government has avoided taking such measures, but according to Mazzone, this is decidedly murky territory.
