Peter Huizenga, a 1963 graduate of the College of Law and the namesake of the Huizenga Commons at the Law building, has died.
According to Crain's Chicago Business, Huizenga and his cousin Wayne helped build Waste Management into a "garbage-hauling juggernaut." Huizenga grew up in the Chicago area in an extended family of garbage haulers. After receiving his bachelor's degree from Hope College and his juris doctor degree from the University of Illinois, he practice law briefly and then joined the family business. He helped take the company public in 1972 and served as director for 30 years.
Peter Huizenga '63 and Ron Galowich '59, along with then Dean Heidi Hurd present the 2005-2007 Galowich-Huizenga Faculty Scholar Award to Professor David Hyman.
Huizenga was a family man and a philanthropist. He also served on the Board of Visitors at the College of Law.
