Just prior to ushering in the new year, the News-Gazette spoke to several local personalities about who they would select as their "Person of the Year."
Professor Colleen Murphy was interviewed, and she chose Denis Mukwege, a Congolese gynecologist and recipient of the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize.
"Dr. Mukwege has spent his adult life using his medical knowledge and skills to repair victims of sexual violence in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. His surgical repair has fundamentally transformed the lives of his patients," she said.
"Dr. Mukwege is extraordinary not just because of the fact that he is positively contributing to the transformation of individual lives, but also because of the context in which he is working..."
