Professors Lesley Wexler and Colleen Murphy participated in a panel discussion on #MeToo and Academia on the University of Illinois campus on February 13th.
Following the event, Wexler spoke with the News-Gazette about her concerns regarding the current Department of Education's plans to scale back protections for sexual harassment victims under Title IX.
"Title IX is shrinking rather than growing," she said.
Wexler is most concerned about a proposed change in the definition of what constitutes sexual harassment to "severe, pervasive and objectively offensive" acts.
"That's a higher standard" than exists now, Wexler said. "It's a higher standard than most situations where you can enact supporting measures and sanctions. I can't stress enough what an incredibly high threshold this is."
