The scholarship of Professor Bob Lawless and bankruptcy colleagues was referenced in a recent Forbes article on the reason for the increase in bankruptcy among the elderly. Lawless pointed to medical debt as a major factor behind the rise.
"In fact, six out of 10 people 65 and older who file bankruptcy do so because they can’t afford to pay their enormous medical bills," Lawless said.
He also spoke about how the elderly no longer have the resources to lean on that their younger counterparts might - their savings tend to be depleted, and most of them are no longer working full-time.
