Professor Colleen Murphy will participate in a workshop on "The Problem of Collaboration" in Mexico City at the Casa de la Universidad de California, San Angel on December 9 and 10. The conference description follows:
In order to rule and control society, authoritarian or totalitarian regimes have usually relied on a web of collaborators, ranging from ordinary citizens to non-state actors, such as business, professional or religious corporations. In many cases, these collaborators, who have assisted public authorities in their efforts to control and subjugate political opponents and the citizenry more generally, have been members of the very same polity/community/nation that the oppressive elite/foreign nation attempts to rule over. This conference is dedicated to explore the problem of collaboration, which remains underexplored in academic literature. The purpose of the two-day workshop is to discuss original papers that will be published as a book in 2020.
