Support for Members of Our University Community
At the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, our pre-eminence in research, teaching and public engagement has long depended on keeping our doors wide open to the most talented students, faculty and staff from all over the United States and abroad. We recruit and embrace the very best regardless of their race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion or national origin.
The university is advocating vigorously against any actions that are needlessly detrimental to our university community and we pledge to be proactive in supporting all of our students, faculty, staff and visiting scholars, whether domestic or international.
An Administrative Working Group on Immigration is monitoring developments in Washington, sharing information and coordinating efforts across campus, and advising the chancellor and provost on appropriate actions and communications in response to evolving federal immigration policy and procedures that may affect undocumented students and foreign nationals on our campus.
These pages include information about our campus position and resources available to students, faculty and staff who might be affected by actions related to changes in immigration law and practices.

Guidance on Changes in US Immigration Policy and Practices:
Understand first and foremost that our international students, faculty, staff, postdocs and visiting scholars are highly valued members of our community who have already been thoroughly vetted through the visa and immigration process. We embrace and celebrate their contributions to our university.
Understand also that this is a rapidly developing and uncertain situation, and implementation is being shaped by varying interpretations by immigration officials, subsequent statements by the Trump Administration, and legal action.
Recommendation (Effective date: 28 January 2017) The university recommends that citizens from these countries avoid traveling outside the U.S. until there is a further assessment of the new policy. Furthermore, friends and family members from the seven countries should be advised not to travel to the U.S. at this time. The university will continue to carefully monitor this situation and provide updates as we receive them.
Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA)
To date the Trump Administration has taken no action to modify the DACA program.

University Practices
The following information clarifies key policies and practices of the university, as well as many resources available to students:
- Enrollment management (e.g., Admissions, Registrar, Student Financial Aid) and International Students and Scholar Services (ISSS) does not collect any information on students’ DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) status.
- Undocumented students who qualify under state law (the Acevedo Act) are charged in-state tuition. Find more information and resources here.
- La Casa Cultural Latina supports all undocumented/DACA students who request services, regardless of whether they identify as Latina/Latino.
- The University of Illinois Police Department continues to work with community and university advocates to train and guide our officers to work in a way that balances human dignity with public safety.
- The university protects student and employee confidential information to the fullest extent allowed by law. For information regarding student rights and employee obligations under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), contact the Registrar’s Office at 217/333-2034 or registrar@illinois.edu. More information can also be found here and here.
