This month’s Alumni Update newsletter highlights a generous gift from the children of alumna May Larson Stoesser, who are making a tremendous difference in the lives of students. The Stoesser children created the May Larson Stoesser Scholarship in memory of May, a Chicago Public School teacher who devoted 27 years to teaching, impacting the lives of so many children. The scholarship supports students in elementary education. Additionally, the newly created gift from Jon-Chao Hong supports conference and research travel in Taiwan and Asia for faculty and students. It is a generous and important contribution that will create valuable research opportunities.
The contributions our alumni make on society is just as important. We are pleased to announce this year’s 2017 Distinguished Alumni Award honorees and our Young Alumni Achievement Award recipient. Congratulations to David L. Edyburn, Mark J. Gierl, Elaine K. Horwitz, Leslie A. Rutkowski, Michael W. Wischnowski, Steven L. Wise, and Steven G. Luke.
As a graduate of the College, we know that you are also making a positive impact each day, and we want to share your story. With the University of Illinois sesquicentennial celebration underway, we’re asking our alumni to share their story about memories of their time here, people and places that were important to them, and how their experiences at the College and Illinois shaped their futures. Please share photos, a video, a story, an audio piece, or a quote. Your memories will become part of our College and campus’s sesquicentennial history and will be archived on the “Share Your Story” page of the Illinois “Celebrating our Sesquicentennial 1867-2017” website. We can’t wait to see what you share!
With spring on the horizon it is an exciting and hopeful time. We are anticipating there will be a new dean to announce in the spring, and we look forward to seeing you at our April 28 reception during the American Educational Research Association Meeting in San Antonio. The reception is an ideal time to reconnect with friends, meet with students, and find out what is new at the College of Education. Look for an invitation with details about the reception soon.
Thank you for your support of the College of Education.
