The qualifications to be accepted to the TRIO McNair Scholars Programs are as follows:
1. Junior status
2. First generation and low income
3. Grade Point Average minimum 2.85
4. Desire to attend graduate school the fall semester immediately after undergrad and earn the PhD degree.

Application
Eligible students are invited to apply to the McNair program during the fall semester. The priority selection deadline is Friday, October 5th, 2018 by 5:00pm.
Complete applications must include the following:
- Application form completed:Click the link to obtain Application Packet
- Faculty Mentor Confirmation Form: Applicants are responsible for securing a faculty research mentor. This is not required for submission. However, you should continue looking for a mentor while we are reviewing your application.
- One letter of recommendation (can be from the proposed faculty mentor, current course professor, supervisor, or community service coordinator):
- Financial Need Assessment & Documentation Form: Complete top portion of form and submit to the financial aid office. Financial aid will complete the bottom portion and will return to our office.
- Parent(s) 2017 Federal Income Tax: Obtain a copy of the parent(s) that claimed you on their income tax. Please make sure an original signature is on the form. Many people file electronically, which means your parent may need to sign your copy for submission.
- Personal Statement: You should submit a minimum 1-page, double-spaced essay about Why you want to attend graduate school and earn the PhD.
All documents may be delivered to our office or scanned and emailed to the TRIO McNair Assistant Director, at triomcnair@illinois.edu.
