As Tanzania study abroad students and members of a social responsibility team, we believe education and collaboration sparks achievement and success. In June 2019, we had the honor of visiting Kisiju Pwani Secondary School. The school is located in a rural coastal village with no electricity. Association of Black Travelers and the Tanzania Cohort is raising money for Kisiju Pwani Secondary School to gain electricity.

Please help us assist the students by coming to our Silent Auction Fundraiser on November 1st at 6pm at the Bruce D Nesbitt African American Cultural Center. We will auction off authentic artwork, jewelry, and beadwork. All proceeds will go towards electricity for Kisiju Pwani Secondary School.

  • SKY Happiness Retreat

The SKY Happiness Retreat is a 20-hour immersive, innovative life-skills training and self-development program offered to thousands of students at more than 40 universities across the country, including Stanford, Ohio State and MIT. Students gain foundational stress-management and leadership skills, develop a personal daily breath-meditation practice, develop strategies for social connection, and engage in peer driven service initiatives. • Beinecke Scholarship Informational Events - 10/31 &11/1

If you are a high-achieving junior and plan to attend graduate school after graduation in the arts, humanities or social sciences, but have concerns about being able to afford it, consider applying for the Beinecke Scholarship.

The Beinecke Foundation is looking for students who have demonstrated superior standards of intellectual ability, scholastic achievement, and personal promise during their undergraduate years. The program seeks to encourage and enable highly motivated U.S. citizen juniors to pursue graduate studies in the arts, humanities, and social sciences. Each scholar receives $4,000 immediately prior to entering graduate school and an additional $30,000 while attending graduate school. Preference is given to candidates for whom the awarding of significant financial aid would increase the likelihood of the student's being able to attend graduate school.

The University of Illinois is one of a select few institutions that may endorse a candidate for the Beinecke Scholarship, and the National and International Scholarships Program has planned two sessions to assist students interested in earning this $34,000 award. The campus deadline for nomination is January 21, 2020. Additional information about the award may be found at: https://topscholars.illinois.edu/beineckebros

If you are interested in applying, please plan to attend our informational sessions:

    Beinecke Scholarship Information Session
    Thursday, October 31st, 3:30-4:30 pm
    514 Illini Union Bookstore Building

    Beinecke Scholarship Writing Workshop

  • Information about registering for ASL classes and SHS 222

For Spring 2020, the department is managing enrollment in all three ASL classes, as well as in SHS 222, via a wait list, which is why these courses appear on the class schedule to be noted as closed or restricted. If you have students who are interested in taking any of these classes, please share with them that although registration does not open until November 4, they can go to the Course Explorer website and put themselves on the waitlist now for any of these classes. They will find the link to the URL below each class section’s meeting time, which is as follows:  https://forms.illinois.edu/sec/2162112. (The URL is updated each semester.) Students will be prompted to fill out the online form and should note the specific course and section of the class they are interested in taking.

It is important to also inform students that being placed on the wait list does not guarantee registration in any of these courses but communication about enrolling off the wait list will come from Andrea Paceley (apaceley@illinois.edu) in the SHS office, 217-333-2230.
