Job Summary: The Pandemic Health Navigator (PHN) will work to decrease the spread of COVID-19 through specialized and individualistic work with clients. PHNs will work with clients who do not often fit well within the standard medical model. The PHN will work closely with medical providers, primary care teams, and other agencies to improve patient outcomes and care. PHNs will complete an intake interview for their clients, provide regular follow-up care and documentation and provide referrals to other services, as necessary. This position will work to decrease the disparities in health due to COVID-19 and will help advocate for social and environmental needs as they arise. The PHN will work closely with PCPs, Local Health Departments, and Community Based Organizations to provide wrap-around services to encourage clients to remain in their homes while positive with COVID-19. The PHN will create a foundation of trust for continued care of socially vulnerable populations.

The Journal of Undergraduate Social Work Research (JUSWR) editorial team is pleased to announce the 3rd issue of the School of Social Work journal of undergraduate original work. Attached you will find the flyer announcing important information about the journal. We also attached the call for papers, which provides more specific details about the submission guidelines, dates, and review process. The JUSWR accepts original research, policy analysis papers, literature reviews, and creative pieces (artistic expression or multimedia presentations). Original work developed for this academic year's courses and the previous academic year will be considered. We hope you will give serious consideration to submitting your work and having the experience of being a published author!

Welcome back continuing BSW students, as well as a big welcome to all of our new social work students, both first year students and transfers! We are very happy to have everyone back in the School of Social Work. This semester we have created a registered student organization (RSO) geared directly toward undergraduate social work majors as well as minors.

To be considered for any of these awards students must: 

Have earned 60 hours of credit by the beginning of the Spring 2018 semester
Be planning to graduate no earlier than December 2018
Have a minimum GPA of 2.75 at the time of application and upon receipt of an award 

Individual awards have different criteria (see www.theillinoisclub.org/scholarship.php for details of individual awards) but several are for students in any major.  Students who submit an application will be considered for all awards for which they are eligible.

The Overnight Shelter Assistant is responsible for overnight assistance and oversight of women utilizing Austin’s Place Emergency Overnight Shelter. This position is a three-night-a-week overnight position, 11.5 hour shifts. Overnight staff is required to remain awake during the overnight hour. The Overnight Shelter Assistant reports to the Shelter Director.

Qualifications: It is recommended that the overnight shelter assistant have at least a High School Diploma or GED equivalent. While no other specific credentials are required to fill this position (e.g.,LCSW, MSW, etc.), experience with the homeless population and/or mental illness is preferred. Presence of good judgment is required as intervention by emergency services may, at time, be necessary. This staff member should have strong attention to detail and organizational skills, as well as good communication skills, and be able to be compassionate with our guests. This person must have the ability to remain awake and alert during the hours on shift.

Compensation/Hours: This is an hourly position. The rate of pay is based on experience and the hours are 7:45PM– 7:15 AM with one half-hour break. This position begins on November 1, 2019 with one paid 4-hour training session prior to this date. This is a temporary position that ends on April 15, 2020.

The Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) is now accepting submissions for the 2020 Undergraduate Research Symposium (URS), set for Thursday, April 30, 2020. The URS is the signature event of Undergraduate Research Week (April 26 - May 2), and brings together students, faculty, and staff from all disciplines on the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign campus, as well as corporate partners and sponsors, to learn more about undergraduate research and its potential to change the world. Over the course of the day, students present their work in concurrent oral and poster presentations (including creative performances), the breadth and scope of which reflect not only the wide range of academic disciplines at the University of Illinois, but also speak to the caliber of our undergraduates.

There will be a variety of free screenings provided by local health care providers as well as from the university.

Do you have a passion to help others and build community?  Are you looking for FREE housing options for the fall?  I am looking for a Supportive Roommate to move in Fall 2018 with free rent and utilities as compensation. 

Responsibilities will include: assisting with medication, offering reminders regarding hygiene, reviewing my schedule with me, providing companionship, helping me to manage bills and household chores, as well as watching out for my general well-being.  On top of that, you could get paid up to 15 hours each week to do other things with me, such as: cooking, grocery shopping, planning and attending social activities, and exercising.

The house is located in Northwest Champaign with easy access to shopping, dining, and MTD bus lines.  It offers your own large bedroom, shared bathroom, new laundry appliances, and a garage for your vehicle.

The National Eating Disorders Association, Champaign-Urbana, IL Walk is on Saturday, April 21st from 9:00am-11:30am at University of Illinois Arboretum - 2001 S Lincoln Ave. In 2017, over 20,000 walkers participated nationwide at 85+ locations!

The Champaign-Urbana Walk will be an incredible morning of raising awareness and funds for eating disorder awareness programs, education outreach, and the support of individuals and families. We want to build community, inspire activism, and work with a diverse group of individuals that support NEDA’s goals and interests. We have a phenomenal line-up of speakers and presenters.

The audience mainly consists of young adults, so we would greatly appreciate help recruiting participants, teams, and volunteers to promote this Walk on campus. It is critical to connect with as many students, faculty, and staff as possible because 30 million people suffer from a clinically significant eating disorder at some time in their life and eating disorders are widespread across college campuses. This would be a fantastic opportunity to stand with students affected by eating disorders and foster necessary dialogue about eating disorders on campus.

Our goal is to garner support in many capacities and raise over $25,000 at the Champaign-Urbana Walk. NEDA is a 501(c)3 non-profit and the proceeds aid our programs and services like our toll free, confidential Helpline. We welcome any assistance recruiting participants/teams for the Walk and connecting with volunteers and organizations to help promote the event on campus (through announcements to classes, tabling, mass emails, online/print publications, chalking, etc.).

The Office of Undergraduate Research announces its Fall 2018 calendar for the Getting Started in Research Workshop.

During this workshop, we will discuss the various forms of undergraduate research that take place on campus, guide students to develop a plan of action to locate research opportunities on campus, and discuss ways to contact faculty research mentors. Students will leave the workshop with (1) a better understanding of undergraduate research and how it takes place on our campus, (2) increased confidence to contact faculty research mentors, and (3) a list of faculty mentors to contact.

McKinley Heath Center’s Health Education Unit is seeking volunteers to become Stress Management Peer (SMP) Leaders.  SMP is dedicated to providing education & awareness to UI students on stress-related topics and concerns. On Wednesday, October 10, 2018, the School of Social Work will host a student led blood drive in Room 2015 from 10 am - 2 pm.  Our goal for the blood drive is to draw 21 units of blood and we really need your help to achieve our goal. To help support meeting this goal the BSW and MSW students will compete against one another to see who can donate the most units of blood. The winning class will receive an Insomnia Cookie Party!

We encourage EVERYONE to participate by signing up for one of the assigned time slots. Please provide your name and cell number when you sign up and expect for the blood donation process to take 1 hour. Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Allies is a state AmeriCorps program supporting prevention, treatment, and recovery agencies throughout Chicago and suburban Cook County. SUD Allies AmeriCorps members engage clients, youth, and providers through a variety of comprehensive services, including case management, health insurance enrollment assistance, prevention education, and anti-stigma education. Administered by Public Health Institute of Metropolitan Chicago, SUD Allies increases resources to combat substance use disorder for individuals, families, and communities. The Stress Management Peers at the University of Illinois are hosting their 14th annual Stress Less Party at the ARC on Wednesday, March 7th from 6-8:30pm. The event is held around midterms to provide students with an opportunity to de-stress, relax, and gain some stress management techniques that will help them the rest of the semester. Come out to the ARC MP7 on Wednesday for free food, games, and fun!  

Mats for Humanity is a large scale plarning event for APO brothers, alumni and other organizations on campus, in which we turn plastic bags into mats that will be donated to the homeless. These mats provide a cushion from the floor and the plastic keeps the bugs away!

Come join us in this large scale plarning event and represent your RSO while doing some sustainable service! There will be facilitators to teach you how to plarn/crochet if you don't know how to!

“Take Your Health to New Heights!”

McKinley Health Center’s Special Populations’ Student Health Concerns Committee is hosting its 26th Annual Health Fair on Tuesday, April 9th from 10am-3pm in the Illini Union Rooms A, B, and C. The main goal of the event is to promote general wellness among the University of Illinois diverse student populations. The Annual Health Fair has attracted over 80 vendors—including local health/social agencies, like Carle, OSF Healthcare, Christie Clinic, and Planned Parenthood, as well as dentists, chiropractors. Services and information are provided FREE of charge for all attendees. So come and enjoy a variety of health programs, displays, and demonstrations, ranging from fitness demos and blood pressure screenings to dance performances and raffle prizes!

Last Spring, the student body voted to create the HOPE Fee to support students who do not qualify for federal financial aid. This year, the HOPE Department has been focusing on the creation of the HOPE Fee Scholarship. The HOPE Scholarship was designed to help undocumented, transgender, and students with minor convictions be equipped with the resources to pursue a higher education at Illinois. Each scholarship recipient may be awarded up to $10,000 in aid. The inaugural year for this scholarship's application period is currently open and closes Friday, May 1st. 

This scholarship also includes an emergency fund for international students who have faced financial barriers to their education due to unforeseen circumstances.

Regardless of their career aspirations, our students will likely encounter traumatized individuals. Despite renewed awareness and concern about trauma in the public, systematic training about trauma is lacking. The goal of this course is to contribute to a better informed public and better informed healthcare professionals by exposing students to accurate information about trauma.

Course Description: This course will examine the psychological and public health impact of a variety of traumatic experiences (e.g., sexual and physical assault, domestic violence, war and torture, community violence, and natural disasters) on diverse populations, including racial and ethnic minorities, veterans, women, children, aging populations, and individuals who identify as LGBTQIA. Students will be able to articulate the prevalence, incidence, and developmental impact of post-traumatic stress across the lifespan. Students will become familiar with the major risk factors for trauma-related dysfunction and cultural factors that exacerbate or ameliorate dysfunction. During course discussions, we will emphasize the influence of culture and history on how individuals and society responds to trauma. Students will begin to think critically about a person’s group memberships and identifications, and the effect of these memberships and identities on the way that an individual experiences and recovers from a traumatic experience. Students will discover how positive change can transpire following trauma exposure. We will investigate evidence-based intervention strategies. Students will have the opportunity to gain exposure to traumatized populations through service learning projects. Case accounts of traumatized individuals, original professional journal articles, classic texts written by trauma experts, service learning opportunities, and documentaries about trauma will enhance learning.

SKY Happiness Retreat is a total well-being training offered to thousands of university students, faculty, and staff across the country. Participants gain foundational stress-management and leadership skills, develop a personal evidence-based breathing and meditation practice, learn a short personal yoga practice, develop strategies for social connection and community building, and engage in peer-driven service initiatives. The SKY Happiness Retreat introduces SKY Meditation, an evidence-based meditation practice integrated with breath work that can significantly increase one's well-being and calmness, and significantly reduces anxiety and stress markers. The course features interactive group processes, experiential learning, emotional intelligence training, breath-work, yoga, evidence-based meditation, and service leadership. It's one of the coolest places to connect with yourself, make awesome friends, and, most importantly, have fun!

Are you concerned about issues facing your community, campus or country, and are you actively working to make change?  The prestigious Harry S. Truman Scholarship program is looking for the academically strong student who has a passion for public service.

Evaluators look for leadership ability, potential for influencing public policies, community service and extracurricular involvement, strong academic performance, and potential to perform well in a graduate school program. It awards $30,000 merit-based scholarships to U.S. citizen college students who wish to attend graduate school in preparation for careers in public service.  Public service includes a wide array of career possibilities, such as public health; local, state, or federal government; educational policy; international relations; conservation; and environmental protection. Candidates should be able to demonstrate leadership experiences in campus and community service activities.

Truman Scholars have pursued many fields of study, such as agriculture, engineering, economics, education, government, history, international relations, law, political science, public administration, and public health. Scholars are required to work in public service for three of the seven years following completion of a Foundation funded graduate degree program as a condition of receiving funding.

Hello fellow Social Work students! I am in the process of creating a database as part of a post-abroad follow up assignment. The intent is to provide the DRES office with data regarding accessibility in various study abroad programs to encourage those with disabilities to seek out opportunities abroad. The ultimate goal of my project is to increase study abroad participation among students with disabilities on campus. This database will be a collection of study abroad programs and the types of accessibility offered in host countries. This will allow students with disabilities to access information when choosing a study abroad program to ensure that they identify an opportunity that is most supportive of their needs. If you are willing to collect this information during your time abroad, please reach out to me via email (provided below). This is not limited to Social Work students.  Anyone going abroad can participate, so if you have a friend in a different major that is studying abroad in the Spring of 2019, please pass this information along! This would be completely on your own time and not a huge commitment, being that you will have all semester to gather this info.  And you have the opportunity to support others in their study abroad experiences!  All you would be responsible for is noting your observations in an excel spreadsheet. This program is open to rising undergraduate sophomores, juniors or seniors interested in exploring the field of health services research. The SUMR 2018 program will run for 12 weeks from May 29 through August 17.

The Office of Volunteer Programs will be partnering with C-UatHome for One Winter Night. One Winter Night is an annual event aimed towards raising awareness and funds for the homeless. OVP will be participating as a street team. We need volunteers!

As a street team, we will be creating a "buzz" for the event around downtown Champaign. We will be waving signs, directing people to the donation sites, and sharing information about homelessness. If you are interested in joining the team, sign up with the One Winter Night sign up form . Sign up quick, spots are limited!

These 1 credit hour elective courses, provides students with opportunities to converse on specific diversity and social justice topic areas offered as separate sections under the course heading. Each section uses a structured dialogue format to explore intergroup and intragroup differences and similarities within historical and contemporary contexts. Specific focus will be on participants sharing their experiences and perspectives related to the specific dialogue topic. The dialogue format uses active learning exercises in addition to weekly readings, journal assignments, and topic based dialogues. Current course topics available: Being White in a Multicultural Society, Exploring Disability, 2 Race/Ethnicity dialogues, Exploring sexual identity, Resisting Marginalization, Conservative/Liberal Dialogue and Exploring Socioeconomic Class. The Career Center (TCC) is seeking two energetic and customer-oriented undergraduate summer interns for 2018. The Career Center is the primary point of contact for all students regarding professional development. The internship focuses on providing direct contact to thousands of incoming students and parents while working alongside TCC staff in designing and creating best outreach methods for current students. The intern will have the ability to work on both small and large projects as well as receive ongoing personalized, professional development help from TCC staff.

Welcoming Week is an annual series of events held in communities across the United States that brings together immigrant and nonimmigrant community members to get to know one another and build community cohesion. This year in Champaign County, 33 events will take place from Friday, September 13 through Sunday, September 22. All events are free, open to the public, and for all ages. Winter Session is Back!

This winter, Illinois is offering more than 35 high-quality courses taught by Illinois faculty and delivered in a condensed, online format over the winter break. Winter Session begins December 21, 2018 and ends January 12, 2019. This is a great opportunity for students to take an active role in their education, enroll in a high demand course and work toward degree completion.

The Center for Innovation in Teaching & Learning (CITL)

The first main event that will kick off the month of October will be Peace Jam! Music for a World Without Violence! On Saturday, October 7th, 11:30am to 2:00pm. The event will feature live music, performances, art, and a resource fair aimed at speaking out against abuse within relationships and coming together as a community to support survivors and end domestic violence. The event is open to all ages and will be located at Lincoln Square Mall in Urbana.

Our keynote speaker for the month will be Julie DiCaro, who will give a discussion-based presentation on Tuesday, October 17, 2017 from 7pm-9pm in Gregory Hall 112, free and open to the public. Julie DiCaro is a Chicago-based sportscaster with a background in domestic violence law, and a public figure who speaks up when she sees gender-based violence perpetrated by professionals in her highly visible industry. By connecting with our campus and local community at this DVAM event, Ms. DiCaro will center the importance of individual and systematic efforts to disrupt the socialized behaviors that contribute to cycles of violence, and we can collectively create a culture without abuse. 

Several departments of the University of Illinois are considering a proposal to create an undergraduate minor in Game Studies & Design.  This program would require 18 credit hours of coursework, including 9 credit hours of elective courses in a wide variety of fields including media, fine arts, humanities, information science, education, computer science, and more.  We would like to know about your interest in such a minor. Colors of Faith is an interfaith dance team that aims to celebrate religious diversity, and to promote unity and mutual understanding through our art. We dance to devotional and cultural songs of various religions, and having danced to Jewish, Sikh, Christian, and Hindu songs in the past hope to continue our celebration of these faiths as well as expand. Students and community members of all identities are welcome. No prior dance experience is required to join.

McKinley Heath Center’s Health Education Unit is seeking volunteers to become Stress Management Peer (SMP) Leaders.  SMP is dedicated to providing education & awareness to UI students on stress-related topics and concerns. We facilitate stress-related workshops; participate in campus-wide program planning and other organized events while embracing the diversity of our campus.
