A superficial glance at the early spring woods yielded little of interest. Had we come here to trek across this 45 degree, slippery slope for nothing? The only clues to anything of note were the tiny white and pale purple dots that punctuated the sere, umber forest floor. Soon, though, upon closer inspection, we found our goal, hundreds upon hundreds of the earliest spring flowers—snow trilliums and diversely colored hepatica!
