Illinois Strategic International Partnerships identifies, cultivates, evaluates, and sustains broadly and deeply impactful inter-institutional partnerships with a small, select group of peer institutions around the world. In addition, ISIP processes, negotiates, drafts, reviews, and evaluates all proposed inter-institutional agreements with partners based outside the U.S., on behalf of any campus academic or research units. ISIP also coordinates campus visits by foreign leadership delegations representing both academic partners and government agencies, serves as the campus liaison for the Fulbright Scholar program, and provides protocol advice and support for the campus.
In 2016-17, Illinois Strategic International Partnerships (ISIP) coordinated, supported, and hosted 32 short-term visiting delegations, representing 21 different countries, including 16 representatives of foreign governments. In 2016-17, ISIP also negotiated, processed, and executed 64 inter-institutional agreements. These new agreements support collaborative activities in 24 different countries around the world, and were negotiated on behalf of 17 different academic and administrative units, representing 9 different colleges across the campus.
ISIP currently manages 459 different inter-institutional agreements, with partners based in 63 different countries, and in support of collaborative activities involving faculty, students and staff in 21 colleges, instructional units, research institutes or administrative units across the campus.
The Birmingham-Illinois partnership for Discovery, Engagement and Education (BRIDGE)—ISIP’s strategic partnership with the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom, has, yielded a 600% return-on-investment to date, with every dollar invested in seed funding to encourage faculty research collaborations bringing in roughly six dollars in external research funds for the continuation of these collaborations.

ISIP is currently gathering data and developing a comprehensive database of the global engagement and expertise of faculty at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. This effort will begin in early 2018 and continue through the coming year. ISIP also continues to refine the classification of inter-institutional agreements and relationships, with the aim of differentiating between institutional, campus, college and department level partnerships, and more effectively depicting the range of international collaborations characteristic of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
