Food Service Director Sandra Duniphan has been a true wellness champion, working to promote healthy food choices among her students.
After attending a Smarter Lunchroom training facilitated by Amy Funk (SNAP-Ed Educator), Sandra decided to start the Smarter Lunchroom Movement in her district. She began working with Laquitsha Bejoile-Hayes (Extension Program Coordinator), who conducted Smarter Lunchroom assessments in the elementary and middle schools and worked with Sandra to implement best practices after the pre-assessments.
After scoring Bronze in the pre-assessment for William-Holliday Elementary School, Sandra and her staff were eager to obtain a Gold ranking. Laquitsha and Sandra met to review the Smarter Lunchroom report of best practices and areas of opportunity to identify where they could improve. Sandra and her staff took on the challenge and when Laquitsha visited again to conduct their post-assessment, they earned Gold!
The day after receiving their new score, all nutrition staff and students were surprised to see that the entire service line area had a full display of gold decorations. The school administration had helped decorate to celebrate the achievement and now call the nutrition staff "The Gold Crew"!
