Job Description
We are seeking hourly technicians for seasonal field and lab work on mosquito and tick surveillance and research. Our group focuses on understanding the distribution and density of vectors of public health concern throughout the state, how environmental factors shape and are altering vector population densities, tracking invasive tick and mosquito species, and understanding the diversity of mosquito- and tickborne pathogens present in Illinois. The position is based at the Illinois Natural History Survey Medical Entomology Lab, within the University Research Park in Champaign, Illinois.
Duties and Responsibilities
Work will include a mix of molecular lab work for detection of pathogens (e.g., aiding in DNA and RNA extractions of mosquitoes and ticks, DNA quantification, RT-qPCR), processing of mosquito and tick samples (sorting of trap samples, identifications), preparing materials for field work, and data entry. Work will also include performing bioassays to determine insecticide resistance status of mosquitoes and insectary work associated with rearing mosquitoes. Field work will consist of collections of mosquitoes and ticks throughout Illinois in a variety of habitats with a team of technicians.
Qualifications
Applicants should be working towards or have obtained a bachelor’s degree, preferably in Biology, Ecology, or related field. Experience with laboratory and field work is advantageous. A valid driver’s license is a requirement.
Salary and Availability: $15 - $17 per hour, depending on qualifications. Available May-November
