Job Description
We are seeking hourly technicians for seasonal field and lab work on mosquito and tick surveillance and research. Applicants should be available for either two consecutive days per week or full-time for the entire or part of this period. The position is based at the Illinois Natural History Survey Medical Entomology Lab, within the University Research Park in Champaign, Illinois.
Duties and Responsibilities
Field work will consist of helping in collections of mosquitoes using a variety of mosquito traps and collection methods and or ticks using tick drags and traps throughout a wide variety of habitats in Illinois and recording a variety of environmental parameters. Trips may include overnights in hotels or field stations. Overnight trips are provided with per diem allowance. This work is done in small teams under the supervision of a program leader as part of an ongoing collaboration with the Illinois Department of Public Health. Laboratory work includes processing of samples for pathogen detection, identifying specimens caught in the field, data entry, and helping senior scientists and graduate students with ongoing experiments and other tasks as needed.
Qualifications
Applicants must be working towards a bachelor’s degree at the University of Illinois, preferably in Biology, or be recently graduated in Biology or a related field. An interest in entomology and public health is a plus. Experience with laboratory and field work is advantageous. A valid driver’s license is a requirement.
Salary and Availability
$15 per hour available May-October
