INHS is seeking Undergraduate Students to work on research projects related to the ecology, behavior, and management of corn and soybean insect pests (principally western corn rootworm beetles/larvae) in corn, soybean, or other crops. This duties of this position will involve 1) daily outdoor on- and/or off-campus field research and laboratory work (e.g. field insect collection, sorting, and/or use of dissecting microscope, establishing research plots), 2) field, greenhouse and laboratory care/handling/bioassays of western corn rootworm beetles, entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) and other insects harmless to humans, 3) some travel to northern and central Illinois on-farm study sites in UI fleet vehicles, 4) assistance with corn root digging to evaluate insect injury, 5) interactions with other UI field crop insect program scientists and graduate students. Some weekend work may be possible.
The position is located at the Forbes Natural History Building in Champaign, IL.
QUALIFICATIONS
Valid Driver's License, ability to work out-of-doors, punctual habits, availability to work throughout the employment period, no allergy to corn, must enjoy working as part of a busy team. Must be available during business hours M- F. Familiarity with field crops/farming, as well as interest in insect ecology/behavior, and/or aerial drone pilot license are a bonus. Curiosity, organization, and thoughtfulness are desirable.
Salary: $15.50 per hour
Available: May 29, 2025 – August 15, 2025 (with the opportunity to extend summer employment – with reduced hours – through August 30, 2025, or later).
