JOB DESCRIPTION
The Illinois Natural History Survey (Prairie Research Institute) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is seeking undergraduate and/or graduate students interested in contributing to an ongoing research project focused on documenting biological associations between insects and pathogenic bacteria using museum biorepositories.
The INHS Insect Collection, which comprises approximately 7 million prepared specimens as well as non-insect arthropods (e.g., arachnids and myriapods) and other invertebrates (e.g., bryozoans), is one of the largest and oldest entomological collections in North America.
We are seeking two motivated individuals to support the expansion of the INHS Insect Collection Database. Responsibilities will include databasing collections and taxonomic information for one of the largest groups of hemipteran insects, as well as managing metadata related to the presence of pathogenic bacteria detected through DNA extraction.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Must have or be in the process of working toward a bachelor's degree in biology or a related biological field.
- Ability to learn and use digital database systems
- Basic knowledge of taxonomy and nomenclature
- Proficiency in commonly used office and data management software
Salary: $15.00 - $18.00 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications.
Available: Approx: June 1, 2026 – July 24, 2026, 30 hours per week.
