This hourly position provides general support for laboratory operations, including supply preparation, sample processing, inventory and equipment maintenance, quality assurance activities, and adherence to laboratory safety procedures. Training will be provided.
Health and Environmental Applications Lab
The Health and Environmental Applications Laboratory (HEAL) conducts advanced chemical analyses to support research on groundwater quality, atmospheric deposition, and watershed health. Services include the measurement of metals, nutrients, and other water quality parameters. HEAL works with researchers, public-sector collaborators, and institutional partners.
- Wash supplies for various projects utilizing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), including acid-washing and baking glassware at 450°C
- Pack and ship supplies to field sites.
- Follow SOPs for supply cleaning, assist in developing/revising supply cleaning SOPs, and ensure Quality Assurance compliance of all supply checks.
- Assist with sample preparation including sample filtration and digestion.
- Utilize laboratory information management system (LIMS) to log-in samples for analysis, print bottle labels, and split samples into appropriate containers.
- Utilize clean supply handling procedures as specified in the lab Quality Assurance Plan and project-specific SOPs per project requirement.
- Maintain safe laboratory practices and receive and stay current with all Division of Research Safety training requirements.
- Maintenance and inventory of project equipment and supplies. Notify manager if supplies are low or need replacement.
- Daily/weekly monitoring and recording of laboratory equipment. Report any readings outside specified parameters to supervisor.
- Assist with maintenance of the laboratory reverse osmosis and deionized water systems.
- Retrieve supplies from the mailroom and organize them in the laboratory. Maintain organized inventory of laboratory supplies.
- Hourly rate $ 18
Preferred - Experience working in a laboratory setting.

May work up to 8 hours per day. Scheduling is flexible but needs to be consistent week to week. The HEAL lab is located in the Illinois State Water Survey 2204 Griffith Dr Champaign IL 61820. The lab operates M-F 8am-5pm. Campus bus stop on "24 Link" available directly outside.
