Job Description
The Illinois State Geological Society (ISGS) and Illinois Natural History Survey (INHS) at the University of Illinois – Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) campus are looking to hire motivated student workers with GIS experience to assist with a cutting-edge wetland mapping research project funded by a joint grant. Positions may extend into the upcoming academic year based on performance and project needs.
This project supports the development and training of a wetland identification model designed to improve how wetlands are mapped across Illinois using deep learning technologies.
Responsibilities include assisting with data pre-processing for model training and validation. Working alongside research staff to clean, organize, and refine spatial datasets. Utilize GIS skills to help prepare high-quality data inputs and perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Candidates must be current undergraduate or graduate students at UIUC with GIS software experience, preferably ArcGIS Pro. Maintain the ability to interpret aerial imagery to identify wetland areas and be detail-oriented, organized, and able to follow data management protocols.
Salary: $20 per hour.
Available: As soon as possible. Flexible hours, part-time to full-time through the summer, with potential for extension into the academic year, ideally at least 20 hours per week.
