Maintain the Illinois Water Inventory Program (IWIP) Database and associated well records data by entering data, evaluating data quality, evaluating historical paper records for information, and conducting interviews with data suppliers from high-capacity water systems in Illinois. Process and file incoming and historical water well information.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Research - Fieldwork/Data Collection: (40%)
- Collect state water use data and enter into the IWIP database.
- Assist in developing improved data collection and dissemination procedures.
Engagement and Outreach: (35%)
- Contact facility operators/irrigators to gather and correct reported water use data as well as ensure data quality.
- Assist in engaging the public and IWIP data providers at meetings and events around the state or virtually.
Research – Data Analysis and Publications: (20%)
- Update files and record catalogues, reconcile missing and duplicate records, copy and scan paper records, and verify geographic locations from reported information under groundwater records staff guidance.
- Assist in analyzing data to look at trends, historical differences, etc., for its research value including the use of relevant data in other Survey databases and providing data and interpretive results to a wide variety of clients including internal staff.
- Assist in preparing technical reports, progress reports, and final reports in accordance with sponsor guidelines.
Other: (5%)
- Perform other duties as needed in order to further the mission and goals of the Survey, PRI, and the University of Illinois.
- Keep abreast of developments in this discipline.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Required: Bachelor’s degree in a physical science-related field. Alternate degree fields will be considered/accepted depending on the nature and depth of the experience as it relates to this position. Preferred: BS degree in a water, geology, geography, or environmental field.
Experience: Required: Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word. Preferred: Proficiency with Microsoft Access, ArcGIS. Past written and verbal communications experience. Experience in data analysis and problem solving; native English speaker.
Training, Licenses or Certifications:
Required: Valid Driver's License
Knowledge Requirements: Required: Ability to interact and ask questions of water professionals. Ability to work independently and in a team environment. Good organization and time management skills. Effective communication via telephone, email, and social media is necessary. Preferred: Understanding of relational data structure. Familiarity with data collection activities. Knowledge of utility systems, industrial processes, and/or irrigation systems related to water use. Demonstrated aptitude for working with numeric data, scientific information, and geographic systems.
