JOB DESCRIPTION

The Illinois Natural History Survey (INHS), one of the five Scientific Surveys housed by the Prairie Research Institute, is seeking up to 2 technicians to support an existing research project that monitors wildlife across Illinois using camera traps. Technicians will work closely with the project manager and other INHS staff while interacting with landowners, the public, and personnel managing public land. Duties will include, but are not limited to: identifying and evaluating potential camera-trapping sites; contacting landowners and working with public land managers; using GPS to navigate to site locations and deploying camera traps following project protocol; and assisting with additional project tasks as assigned. This position will be based in Champaign, Illinois, with statewide travel required to field sites.  

QUALIFICATIONS

Must have or be in the process of working toward a bachelor's degree in wildlife biology, natural resources management, or a related field. Candidate must possess strong communication skills, can work outdoors for extended periods of time in various weather conditions, can work independently and as part of a team, be able to adapt to changing schedules and field conditions, have a basic understanding of GPS and mapping tools for site navigation, strong attention to detail and the ability to maintain accurate records, and have a valid driver’s license. Preference will be given to applicants who have experience conducting field research for wildlife research projects, especially with camera trapping, experience interacting with the public and landowners for research project purposes, and have an interest in research on wildlife in the Midwest.                 

Salary: $15 - $20 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications as they relate to this role.                                                 

Available: September 1, 2026, through December 2026.   The start date can be adjusted slightly depending on the candidate’s availability.
