Student Hourly at Illinois Sustainable Technology Center
The Illinois Sustainable Technology Center, a division of the Prairie Research Institute at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign is seeking two student hourlies to support a cutting-edge research project focused on waste characterization, spectrometry and machine learning integration, and biofertilizer utilization. This is an excellent opportunity for students in environmental science, biochemistry, digital agriculture, or related fields to gain hands-on experience with advanced analytical techniques and data processing methods.
Job Description:
The duties required include glassware cleaning, laboratory housekeeping, literature searching, sample preparations, benchtop experiments design and operation, instrumental analysis, data processing and evaluation, and production of technical reports. The candidates are expected to
- Maintain detailed and organized laboratory notebooks and documentation. Glassware cleaning, laboratory housekeeping.
- Perform characterization, including sample preparation and analysis, operate spectrometry equipment (e.g., Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry).
- Collect, organize, and manage experimental data for downstream analysis.
- Assist with integrating spectrometry data into machine learning models.
- Collaborate with the research team to troubleshoot and refine experimental methods.
Qualification:
The candidate should be currently pursuing or obtained BS or MS degree in Crop Science, Natural Resources Environmental Science, Environmental & Civil Engineering, Chemistry, or related fields.
The candidates should have good laboratory skills, be able to work independently, follow SOP, communicate well, and have a strong sense of safety awareness when working in the laboratory.
Programming skills (e.g., Python, R, or MATLAB) are a bonus. Candidates with experience in spectrometry techniques or machine learning tools are preferred, but not required (training will be provided).
Schedule, Salary, and Apply:
Student hourly will work up to 20 hours per week during semesters with some schedule flexibility. Salary will be at least $18/hour for student hourly, depending on experience and degree.
