Medical Entomology Field Technician
Illinois Natural History Survey
Prairie Research Institute
Job Description
The Illinois Natural History Survey’s Medial Entomology Lab is seeking undergraduate students or hourly technicians for seasonal field and lab work on mosquito and tick surveillance and research.
Our group focuses on understanding the distribution and density of vectors of public health concern throughout the state, how environmental factors shape and are altering vector population densities, tracking invasive tick and mosquito species, and understanding the diversity of mosquito- and tickborne pathogens present in Illinois. The position is based at the Illinois Natural History Survey Medical Entomology Lab, within the University Research Park.
Duties and Responsibilities
Work includes a significant amount of fieldwork to collect mosquitoes from locations throughout Illinois. This involves preparing vehicles and materials for field collections, traveling with a small team of field collectors to set out mosquito traps and retrieve samples the following day, and processing samples in the lab (sorting of trap samples, and identifications). The fieldwork will frequently require overnight travel, in which case a per diem is provided.
Work may also include assisting with molecular lab work for the detection of pathogens (e.g., aiding in DNA and RNA extractions of mosquitoes and ticks, DNA quantification), data entry, performing bioassays to determine insecticide resistance status of mosquitoes, insectary work associated with rearing mosquitoes, and aiding with ongoing experiments and projects as needed.
Qualifications
A background or interest in biology, ecology, entomology, or a related field, and prior experience with laboratory and field work is advantageous. A valid driver’s license is a requirement.
Salary: $15-17 per hour, depending on experience.
Availability: April 2024 -October 2024, up to 40 hours per week, but at minimum for two consecutive days per week.
To Apply: For full consideration, applications should be submitted by February 29, 2024. However, the position will remain open throughout the field season. To apply, please submit a cover letter stating your interests and qualifications and a brief resume to Dr. Chris Stone (cstone@illinois.edu). Positions will remain open throughout the field season.
