JOB DESCRIPTION

The Illinois Natural History Survey is seeking technicians to assist with laboratory tasks associated with wildlife research. Duties include, but are not limited to, archiving and managing data pertaining to genetic samples, participating in the organization of the lab and its biological samples, conducting work under laboratory biosafety level 2 conditions, and conducting laboratory and field technical duties related to this project, conducting laboratory tasks, including tissue and sample cutting and handling, sample storage, sample labeling and organization, autoclave operation and validation, freezer performance checks, defrosts, inventory, and organization of freezer contents, and conducting DNA isolation, PCR, and gel electrophoresis.   This position will be based in Champaign, Illinois. 

QUALIFICATIONS

Must be working toward a bachelor’s degree in animal sciences or related field. Laboratory, field experience, and/or animal handling work are preferred. Effective communication, personal relations, collaboration, organizational, teamwork, and leadership skills. Demonstrated ability to perform effectively in a diverse and fast-paced work environment consisting of multiple and changing priorities with stringent deadlines, under minimal supervision.  Attention to detail, sound judgment, and strong conflict resolution skills.  Proficiency in commonly employed software and databases.  Biosafety level 2 training is preferred.                 

Salary: $18 per hour                                               

Available:  September 2026 – June 2027 (start and end dates are flexible)
