ISAS is seeking to hire a Visiting Senior Scientific Specialist, Geospatial Science to provide Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technical and specialized production process support for the GIS and Data Stewardship Section. The focus is on cleaning and preparing databases, hosted geospatial data, and online maps; documenting workflows for State programs; and contributing significantly to web application initiatives.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Research – Geospatial Information Support
- Extract, transform, and load data from multiple sources to a specified database schema.
- Assemble, clean, integrate, analyze, and display information and data from a variety of sources in a digital format using GIS, web mapping applications, and other software.
- Coordinate with GIS and Data stewardship section staff, outside agency staff, and other ISAS staff to apply GIS software to produce deliverables and meet project deadlines.
- Document production workflows and procedures.
Research – Web Application Support
- Coordinate with section and external agency staff to increase automation and efficiency of tasks.
- Create, modify, maintain, and document custom scripts and routines for GIS processes and applications.
- Conduct testing and quality assurance to ensure optimal performance and usability of GIS solutions.
Engagement and Other
- Contribute to the education, outreach, and/or service goals of the Survey, PRI, the University of Illinois, and the state of Illinois.
- Keep abreast of developments in this discipline.
- Perform other duties as needed to further the mission and goals of the Survey, PRI, and University.
Minimum Qualifications:
Required:
Bachelor’s degree in Geography, GIS, Architecture, Urban Planning, Landscape Architecture, archaeology, computer sciences, information sciences, or related discipline. Alternate degree fields will be considered/accepted depending on the nature and depth of the experience as it relates to this position. Industry or academic research experience. At least two (2) years professional experience preparing web maps. Familiarity with Esri’s geoprocessing tools, Python scripting (including Esri’s ArcPy and script tools). Understanding of the principles and practices of GIS and the methods and techniques of designing, cleaning, and maintaining GIS databases.
Preferred:
Master’s degree in geography, GIS, architecture, urban planning, archaeology, computer sciences, information sciences, or related discipline. Alternate degree fields will be considered/accepted depending on the nature and depth of the experience as it relates to this position. Demonstrated proficiency using Python (including ArcPY) scripting languages or SQL. Familiarity with historic architecture, preservation and regulations, and the archaeology of the Midwestern US.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Experience using ESRI GIS software, including ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online and web mapping tools. Ability to provide detailed written documentation including documentation, metadata, software instructions, standards, and specifications in a clear, concise, and well-structured manner. Efficient and effective communication, personal relations, collaboration, organizational, teamwork, and leadership skills. Must possess strong interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively with other scientists, researchers, staff, and clients. Demonstrated ability to perform effectively in a diverse and fast-paced work environment consisting of multiple and changing priorities with stringent deadlines. Attention to detail, sound judgment, and strong conflict resolution skills. Working knowledge of Microsoft products (including, but not limited to, Teams, Word, Excel, and Outlook). Preferred: Familiarity with state of Illinois historic preservation laws, and regulations. Data processing/management, python scripting, GIS, and Computer Science background.
Working Conditions:
Work is conducted in a shared office. Some work may involve travel to ISAS field stations, exposure to heat, humidity, and lifting items weighing up to 30 pounds.
Appointment Information:
This is a full-time visiting academic professional appointment. Position may become a regular position at a later date depending on funding and a programmatic need. The budgeted amount for this position is $50,000 to $65,000. The salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the full range for a position.
