Champaign, Ill. - Sally McConkey, Water Resources Engineer at the Illinois State Water Survey, has been elected Chair of the Association of State Floodplain Managers (ASFPM). She began her one-year term on May 19.
As Chair, McConkey is a member of the ASFPM Board of Directors and helps develop agendas and interacts with other organizations and with legislators. One important issue this year is the reauthorization of the National Flood Insurance program which is due to expire in September. McConkey has testified before both the House and Senate regarding this proposed legislation.
The ASFPM is a national organization representing 14,000 floodplain managers and other professionals involved in government agencies at all levels, citizen groups, academia, and lenders.
McConkey is currently Manager of the ISWS Hazard Identification and Mapping Program in the Center for Watershed Science. The IWSW is a division of the Prairie Research Institute at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
