Dear campus community member:
We would like to provide you with additional information regarding a shooting near campus that prompted a series of Illini-Alert messages last night.
At about 11:28 p.m. Saturday, Champaign Police responded to the 100 block of East Green Street for a report of a shooting. Upon their arrival, officers began providing medical aid to a 20-year-old victim, who was then transported to a local hospital and taken into surgery in critical condition. None of the people involved are believed to be affiliated with the university.
The Champaign Police Department has posted a news release with more information.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Champaign Police Department at 217-351-4545. Arrangements can be made to share information privately. Witnesses may remain anonymous by contacting Champaign County Crime Stoppers by phone at 217-373-8477, online at 373tips.com, or by downloading the P3 Tips mobile app. All messages to Crime Stoppers are electronically stripped of identifying information and are received by a third party before they are forwarded to police.
University Police will continue to provide additional high-visibility patrols to deter this activity in the area immediately surrounding campus. As we did last night, we will promptly notify you of emergencies via Illini-Alert. Anyone with a campus NetID can sign up to receive Illini-Alert text messages at emergency.illinois.edu. Others can sign up by texting “IlliniAlert” to 226787.
Gun violence is an issue that is affecting communities across the country, and ours is no exception. We have a safe campus, but it is important that we take steps to look out for ourselves and each other, including staying in groups and using well-lit areas when traveling at night. You can help prevent crime by reporting suspicious activity to police and providing information when you witness an incident.
As always, thank you for being an active partner in the safety of our community. We are looking forward to a safe and productive semester.
Sincerely,
Alice Cary
Executive Director of Public Safety and Chief of Police
