Dear campus community member,
I would like to provide an update on the Illini-Alert you received last night regarding a shooting incident near Second and Green streets in Champaign.
One person was struck by gunfire and was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased. The Champaign Police Department has made an arrest. Neither the victim nor the person arrested are affiliated with the university. Champaign Police released additional information this morning: https://champaignil.gov/2022/07/16/homicide-investigation-200-block-of-e-green-street/.
We are thankful to our partner law enforcement agencies – specifically Champaign Police, Urbana Police and the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office – who acted quickly to begin to bring a resolution to this incident. Unfortunately, we know too well the physical and mental toll that gun violence takes on our community, and on victims and their families in particular. Law enforcement agencies and our community partners will continue to work proactively and with urgency to prevent violence and keep our community safe.
While this incident does not present an ongoing threat to campus following the arrest, we continue to advise taking some basic precautions:
- Stay together. Do not walk alone at night. Travel in groups and in well-lit areas. Call 217-333-1216 for a SafeWalks escort if you need one.
- Be alert. Maintaining awareness of your surroundings is critical, especially when traveling at night. Wearing headphones or looking at your phone diminishes your ability to respond to your surroundings. Walk with purpose, and stay attentive.
- Trust your instincts. If it doesn't feel right, it probably isn't. Call police if something looks odd — we're happy to assist, and even the smallest bit of information could prevent another crime.
- Watch out for each other. Call 911 immediately if you or someone else is in danger.
Thank you for your continued partnership in helping to maintain the safety of our campus area.
