Simson Kraus, 50, of Champaign, was arrested at 1:09 a.m. Friday near First and Green streets, Champaign, on a Champaign County warrant for failure to appear in court. Police initially were called by a convenience store employee who wanted Kraus removed from the business after he consumed a beverage without paying for it and then refused to leave.
of I. student Aditya K. Rao, 19, of Champaign, was arrested at 2 p.m. Friday at the U. of I. Public Safety Building, 1110 W. Springfield Ave., Urbana, for filing a false police report. At 11 p.m. Thursday, Rao called police to report that he had been the victim of a robbery on campus. The report prompted police to send an Illini-Alert emergency notification to all students, faculty and staff. On Friday, Rao told investigators that his account of the robbery was fabricated.
A U. of I. student reported that sunglasses, a charging cable and a bottle of cologne had been stolen from his vehicle between 2:30-5:30 p.m. Thursday while it was parked on Pennsylvania Avenue near Goodwin Avenue, Urbana. One of the vehicle’s windows had been rolled down while parked. The stolen items have a total estimated value of $110.
At about 12:52 a.m. April 1, two loaded firearms were recovered after being discarded by a person who ran from police. Officers initially attempted to stop a vehicle in the 400 block of East Church Street, Champaign, after recognizing it as the same vehicle that had fled from the officers during a traffic stop about two weeks before. During the April 1 traffic stop, the vehicle again refused to stop for police and circled the block before a passenger exited the vehicle and ran from officers. The person who ran was not apprehended, but police found two loaded firearms that were discarded along the way.
