Austin S. Cuppernell, 20, of Philo, Illinois, was arrested at 10:57 p.m. Monday at Lincoln Avenue and Park Street, Urbana, for possessing a stolen vehicle and driving with a suspended license. Police initially stopped a rental truck driven by Cuppernell because an officer recognized its license plate number as one that was recently reported stolen.
At 9:53 a.m. Sunday in the 1400 block of West Green Street, Urbana, Rudiger K. Beer, 56, of Champaign, was issued a state of Illinois notice to appear in court for aggravated assault. At the same time and place, Christian D. Jackson, 22, of Champaign, was issued a state of Illinois notice to appear in court for aggravated battery. The two reportedly had been involved in a fight on a Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District bus, with Beer acting aggressively toward Jackson and Jackson responding by striking Beer in the face.
A U. of I. employee reported that another employee had sent her threatening messages via social media between Friday and Sunday. Police continue to investigate.
A U. of I. student reported that someone had tampered with his electric scooter, causing the brakes to fail. The damage is believed to have occurred between 8:55-9:45 a.m. Monday while the scooter was being stored in a public area inside Everitt Laboratory, 1406 W. Green St., Urbana. An estimated cost to repair the damage was not provided.
A U. of I. student reported that someone had opened a fraudulent mobile phone account in his name. On Sunday, the student received notice from a credit monitoring service that a $3,920 bill for mobile services was being sent to a collections agency. Upon inquiring with the mobile provider, the student learned that someone had opened an account with his name and Social Security number in November. The student has not paid the bill and is working with the mobile provider’s investigations department.
