A U. of I. student reported Monday that he was scammed out of $2,950. The student received a phone call from a number that appeared to originate from a local police department. The caller said the student was wanted on warrants and needed to pay the caller to avoid arrest. The student complied with instructions to visit a local retail store, purchase gift cards and then give the gift card information to the caller.
At 12:07 p.m. Monday, a U. of I. employee reported that another person had violated an order of protection on April 27. The employee reported that he was approached by the person while he was working at the Housing Maintenance Shop, 511 Hazelwood Drive, Urbana. The person is under a court order not to have contact with the employee.
A U. of I. student reported that someone had burned papers posted on his residence hall room door on two separate occasions Saturday and Sunday. The fires did not cause permanent damage.
A U. of I. student reported Tuesday that her $200 headphones had been stolen. The student last saw them Friday at Clark Hall, 1203 S. Fourth St., Champaign, and noticed them missing on Saturday. GPS tracking information showed that they had been taken to an apartment in Urbana.
Quentin A. Coleman, 21, of Urbana, was arrested at 3:20 a.m. Tuesday near First Street and University Avenue, Champaign, for driving under the influence of alcohol and illegal transportation of alcohol. Coleman’s vehicle initially was stopped because he failed to signal a turn.
