At 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 2400 block of East Prairie Green Drive, Urbana, Lanaeja D. Carter, 20, of Champaign, was issued a state of Illinois notice to appear in court for aggravated fleeing and eluding a police officer. Urbana Police had taken Carter into custody on an unrelated charge and contacted University Police after learning that she was a suspect in an incident related to an Aug. 21 shooting near Second and Green streets, Champaign. During that incident, Carter did not stop for police as she was driving away from the location of the shooting. In addition to the notice to appear in court, she was issued traffic citations for driving the wrong way on a one-way street, driving recklessly, disobeying a stop sign, driving on a sidewalk and driving on the wrong side of the road.
A U. of I. employee reported that several items had been damaged between 7 a.m. and 11:11 p.m. Thursday at Gregory Hall, 810 S. Wright St., Urbana. The damage included thermostats ripped from the wall, broken bathroom paper towel dispensers, hand soap spread across bathroom floors and toilets clogged with paper. Altogether, four restrooms and a classroom were affected. The total estimated cost to repair the damage is $1,020. The employee said similar incidents had occurred at Gregory Hall several times since the beginning of the semester.
A U. of I. student reported that he was the victim of an exploitation scam Sept. 10. The student initially was contacted by an unknown person through social media, and the two began exchanging messages that became sexual in nature. After the student sent sexually explicit images of himself, the unknown messenger threatened to post the pictures online unless the student paid the messenger $300. The student did not comply with the demand and contacted police.
