A U. of I. student reported that someone attempted to steal his wallet and keys at 9:38 p.m. Saturday at the Illini Union, 1401 W. Green St., Urbana. The items were left on a table in the basement Rec Room while the student was bowling nearby. A man grabbed the items and ran from the area, while the student and a friend pursued him. The keys were recovered when the offender dropped them inside the Illini Union, and the student’s friend retrieved the wallet after confronting the man on the Quad. The offender left the area before police arrived and the investigation is ongoing.
A U. of I. student reported that his backpack containing a laptop computer had been stolen from a Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District bus at approximately 2:55 p.m. Sunday. The student accidentally left the backpack on the bus when he exited at the Pennsylvania Avenue Residence Hall stop in the 1000 block of West College Court, Urbana. Tracking information showed that the device was taken from the bus to a motel in the 1100 block of North Cunningham Avenue, Urbana. The backpack and its contents have a total estimated value of $1,029.
A U. of I. employee reported that the front license plate had been stolen from his vehicle between Tuesday and Sunday. The location of the theft is not known.
At 4:33 a.m. Friday near University and Goodwin avenues, Urbana, Travis G. Hubbard, 35, of Champaign, was issued a state of Illinois notice to appear in court for illegal possession of cannabis in a motor vehicle. Hubbard’s vehicle initially was stopped because it had one headlight out. A police officer smelled an odor of cannabis upon approaching the vehicle, and a search yielded a small amount of cannabis in an unapproved container.
