A U. of I. visiting scholar reported Tuesday that she had been the victim of deceptive practices. On Saturday, the scholar sent $1,000 to a person whom she met online and believed that person was a legitimate representative of a bank offering currency exchange. The scholar asked for the money to be returned in Chinese Yuan, but it never was.
A U. of I. student reported that someone had used his student card to make food and drink purchases totaling $71.86 at campus convenience stores between Friday and Monday. The student had lost his card Friday.
The manager of a car rental business at Willard Airport, 11 Airport Road, Savoy, reported that someone had stolen a $59,045 vehicle. The car was rented Feb. 7 and was to be returned Feb. 14. As of Monday, the car had not been returned.
Julian T. Hess, 20, of Mahomet, Illinois, was arrested at 12:25 a.m. Tuesday at Fourth and Daniel streets, Champaign, for driving under the influence of alcohol, driving an uninsured vehicle, driving the wrong way on a one-way street and resisting a police officer. Hess’ vehicle was initially stopped because he was driving the wrong way on a one-way road. Hess initially refused officers’ orders to get out of his vehicle, to sit in the squad car, and to exit the squad car at the jail.
