Miyakee K.S. McDonald, 21, of Chicago, was arrested at 10:15 p.m. Monday on a charge of theft at the U. of I. Public Safety Building, 1110 W. Springfield Ave., Urbana. The victim, who is acquainted with McDonald, was sitting in her vehicle parked at the Illini Union, 1401 W. Green St., Urbana, when McDonald reportedly approached the vehicle, opened the passenger-side door and stole the victim’s keys and cellphone. The victim called police and contacted McDonald, who did not initially cooperate in returning the stolen property. McDonald was arrested after she arrived at the Public Safety Building to return the victim’s property.
A U. of I. student reported Tuesday that she was the victim of deceptive practices. On Dec. 5, the student responded to an online job advertisement seeking a pet sitter. The unknown person who posted the advertisement agreed to pay the student $300 per week and sent her a check for $3,380 with directions to deposit the check, keep $300 for herself and send the balance to a third party. The student later discovered the original check bounced. At the time of the report, efforts were underway to stop the check that the student had mailed Saturday to a third party.
A U. of I. employee reported that someone had painted graffiti in a bathroom at the Plant Sciences Laboratory, 1102 S. Goodwin Ave., Urbana. The damage is believed to have occurred between Dec. 9 and Friday and will cost an estimated $200 to remove. The graffiti was not of a culturally insensitive nature.
