A U. of I. student reported that she had been the victim of deceptive practices Wednesday afternoon. The student received a call from an unknown person who claimed to be a federal employee and told the student that her Social Security number had been compromised. The student was instructed to purchase $1,600 in gift cards and provide the caller with the gift card information to remedy the situation. The student completed the transaction and later called police.
A U. of I. employee reported Tuesday that unauthorized transactions totaling $277.59 had been made on a U. of I. credit card. The card, which was in the employee’s possession at the time of the fraudulent charges, has since been canceled.
A U. of I. student reported that her backpack had been stolen from a locker between 2-2:45 p.m. Wednesday at the Activities and Recreation Center, 201 E. Peabody Drive, Champaign. The backpack and its contents have a total estimated value of $320. No information was provided on whether the locker was secured.
Warren L.S. Montgomery, 22, of Urbana, was arrested at 9:54 p.m. Wednesday at the Activities and Recreation Center, 201 E. Peabody Drive, Champaign, for criminal trespassing on state-supported property. A police officer recognized Montgomery and was aware that he previously had been issued a no-trespassing notice for all U. of I. property.
