Three people reported that someone had broken into their vehicles between Aug. 9 and Friday at the U. of I. Golf Course, 800 Hartwell Drive, Savoy, Illinois. Cash and banking cards were stolen, and the cards were later used at Champaign retail stores. At least one of the vehicles incurred an estimated $500 in damage during the break-in.
A U. of I. student reported that his bicycle had been stolen between July 30 and Saturday outside his apartment in the 700 block of South Gregory Street, Urbana. The bicycle, which has an estimated value of $300, was locked to a rack.
At 12:22 p.m. Friday outside the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology, 405 N. Mathews Ave., Urbana, Gregory L. Clark, 58, of Urbana, was issued state of Illinois notices to appear in court for aggravated assault and failure to appear in court. Police initially were called by a passerby who reported that Clark had threatened to stab him with garden shears.
On Friday, a U. of I. student reported an attempted scam. The student reported that she received an email on July 28 from a person purporting to be a professor regarding employment with UNICEF. After corresponding via text message and email for about two weeks, the unknown person sent the student a check for $2,453.70 and directed the student to deposit the funds in her account. The bank declined the check, and the student did not suffer any financial loss. The emails had come from the campus email address of another U. of I. student whose account had been hacked.
