Wellness in a Virtual World
It is important to still practice wellness, even with the ever-changing landscape we are currently working through.
Below, we have outlined a handful of ways to maintain your financial, physical, and social wellness while we transition to a primarily virtual environment to work, play, and learn.
Financial Wellness
You can practice financial wellness by utilizing mobile/electronic banking options to stay up to date with your finances, while still limiting your exposure to large groups of people.
Some places are not accepting physical money in order to reduce risk of exposure to employees and patrons alike. Check out our blog posts on mobile wallets and peer-to-peer payment apps to learn what to look for when choosing digital payment options.
During this time it is important to be mindful of your spending. If you are looking for resources on how to budget, track spending, or create S.M.A.R.T goals, check our modules in the Spend course: Budget Hacks and Spooked by Spending Plans.
Physical Wellness
Just because you may not have access to the local gym, or campus recreation center, does not mean you have to give up on your physical well-being. NBC published an article with gyms and apps you can use for free during this turbulent time. Other ideas to stay active include:
- walking
- running
- stretching
- body weight exercises
Remember, SMMC does not promote using any service over another, and you should always consult a medical professional to make sure you're healthy enough for physical activity.
Nutritional Wellness
Practicing nutritional wellness requires making financial choices about what you're going to eat. SMMC is not an expert on nutrition, but we do like to highlight resources to help you make informed choices about your food spending.
The USDA offers recipes, budgets, and other materials to make meal prepping easier to acheive! SMMC also offers a module in the Save course, called How to Save on Food, you can use to learn how to curb food spending.
It is important to recognize that food insecurity affects alot of individuals. To learn more about terms like food insecurity, read our post on coronavirus challenges to our financial security.
Social Wellness
You can promote your social wellness during this time by using virtual environments to stay connected with others. Examples include:
- have a virtual lunch date
- use messaging applications
- play online games
- join a virtual club
- practice mindfulness
Check with your Univeristy or employer to see what virtual applications you have access to. Your iCard gives you access to some perks that may be helpful as well.
