Cahokia-style “Black Drink” beaker from Schuyler County, Illinois (AD 1150-1250). Dimensions: H 10.0 cm, W 17.7 cm, D 13.1 cm. These hand-held containers are similar to large coffee cups, and according to recent chemical analyses, were used by individuals to consume Yaupon Holly Tea, or the so-called “Black Drink.” The engraved decoration on the exterior depicts the Cahokian cosmos, and was intended to be grasped by the person drinking from the cup.
