Happy Bike Month! With the end of the academic year approaching, we want to wish the best of luck to all our students on their final exams and projects. It is also important to think about moving out and what to do with your bicycle. If you plan on leaving campus for the summer or are graduating and don’t plan to return to campus, you should think about all the options you have with your bike. Here are some options that we recommend you take into consideration:
- Take your bike home with you. Wherever home may be for you, make sure to save space in your vehicle for a bike to make it back home. Car racks on the back, front, or top of your vehicle are helpful items to help mount your bike on the outside of the car if space is limited.
- Leave it in a safe place. We highly suggest storing it in an apartment on campus or storage unit close to campus, so it can be available to you next fall when you return to campus. Bike’s left unattended on campus grounds may be considered abandoned and forfeited. If the owner cannot be identified or does not come to retrieve their bike, it may be donated.
- Donate it to the Campus Bike Center or to The Bike Project of Urbana-Champaign (TBP). The Campus Bike Center is located at 51 E. Gregory Dr., Champaign, IL, and they would be more than willing to accept your bicycle if you don't need it. Similarly, TBP is a 501c(3) nonprofit that advocates for biking in the community by repairing bikes, sharing knowledge, and holding classes. They are located at 202 S Broadway Ave #24, Urbana, IL, and they will be happy to accept bike donations.
Again, good luck to you all on your upcoming finals, and congratulations to our new graduates! Don’t forget to register your bike to keep it safe wherever you live or choose to ride in the US or Canada.
