What made you decide to attend Illinois to pursue education?
I chose to attend Illinois to pursue my degree in Special Education because when I first heard stories and experiences, I heard about the sense of family and the variety of opportunities the program offers its students. Being a part of a small, tight-knit family while attending a Big Ten university seemed like home to me, and when I visited, I felt a sense of family and support immediately.
What is your favorite (education) class you have taken so far? And/Or... Is there a faculty or staff member you’d like to shout out and why?
So far, in my professional sequence, my favorite class has been SPED 440 with Dr. Ray. Starting in your professional sequence can be overwhelming and stressful, but her class supported me every step of the way during my first semester in placement. Her class allowed me to work with a case study student to practice the assignments we are required to do in the practicum setting. With the practice in her class, I have been able to understand and complete each assignment with confidence.
What do you look forward to most about pursuing a career in education?
I love seeing the joy students have for learning while unknowingly reaching their goals. As a teacher, I want my classroom to be a space where my students feel loved and supported while they also learn from themselves and those around them, which will encourage them to keep working hard.
What long-term goals do you have for yourself and your career?
As of now, I plan to return to the suburbs of Chicago to begin my teaching career, but my long-term goal is to end up in educational administration.
What do you love most about being a part of the Illinois community?
My favorite part of the Illinois community is the support. Although our campus is really big, our programs at the College of Education bring such a small and welcoming community that offers so much support and encouragement. I have met so many mentors, friends, and professors along the way that I know will support me no matter what.
What is your favorite spot to grab coffee or food or do something fun in Champaign-Urbana?
On campus, my favorite spot to get coffee is Starbucks at the Bookstore or Union. Both locations are "hot spots," so the chances of running into friends there are high, which always brightens my day.
What is a fun fact about you?
I am a twin, and we attended school every day from pre-K to senior year of high school. Not going to college with each other was an adjustment, but I feel we both made the best decision to support our career paths and aspirations.
