What made you decide to attend Illinois to pursue education?
Education has always been my passion, and I felt that Illinois offered me not only the best program but a college that felt like home. From the second I stepped into the Education building, it felt like a family that welcomed me with open arms. I was also so impressed by the opportunities available at the College of Education through IGlobal, Study Abroad, Education-based RSOs, and the warm college setting overall. I felt that Illinois could set me up for the best and most thorough education experience/instruction and a positive community and safe space. I couldn't be happier with my choice!
What is your favorite (education) class you have taken so far?
Education 201. This course was about Identity and Differences in Education, so every week, we read about a specific identity and discriminations/privileges they experience in the classroom. Then, we spent our discussion session talking about what we had learned and how we thought those issues could be solved. This class really helped me see the classroom from many different perspectives and will make me a more culturally responsive educator.
What do you look forward to most about pursuing a career in education?
I'm most excited to have my very own classroom. I am looking forward to being able to create an environment where students can feel welcomed and valued every day. My greatest goal as an educator is to have a positive impact on my students and I cannot wait to have my own students and space to be able to make that change.
Are you involved in any RSOs, greek life, clubs, teams, or organizations, and if so, do you serve in any leadership positions? Tell us about your experience in these organizations.
I am a member of the Marching Illini, and it is one of my favorite things about attending Illinois. I have found that being involved in an RSO that you're passionate about is truly the best way to make new friends at school. I have met some of my best friends through the Marching Illini, and it has been such a positive place to have fun and play music.
What are some long-term goals you have for yourself and your career?
Over the course of my life and my career, I really would like to teach math and eventually make my way to teaching more advanced courses. I want to earn my masters during my teaching to have higher knowledge and impact. On a more personal note, I want to start a family and build relationships with my family and colleagues.
What do you love most about being a part of the Illinois community?
To me, the best part of being an Illini is the people. Attending this university makes you a part of this super special and exclusive club of Illini. I have met the most amazing friends, learned from phenomenal teachers, and gained exposure to so many new people and perspectives. It is also a legacy that will last a lifetime because once an Illini, always an Illini. ILL!
What is your favorite spot to grab coffee or food or do something fun in Champaign-Urbana?
My favorite thing in the world is to get a good coffee during a study session. Thankfully, there are so many great places on campus to do that! My personal favorite would have to be Cafe Paradiso, though. The coffee is the best on campus, and it has the best cafe energy, in my opinion. It's such an aesthetic study space that makes me feel straight out of my favorite TV shows.
What is a fun fact about you?
I LOVE coffee. My usual order is an iced white mocha or an iced latte, but it's ALWAYS changing!
