Shelby is pursuing one of the College of Education's non-licensure bachelor's degrees, in Learning and Education Studies. She has a passion for helping adults learn and train in professional settings.
A little bit about Shelby:
Q: Where is home for you?
A: Brighton, Illinois.
Q: What is your year and major?
A: I'm a junior, and I am majoring in Learning and Education Studies: Workplace Training and Development.
Q: How did you know you wanted to go into the field of education?
A: I chose WTD because I have a passion for adult learning. I love disseminating information in the workplace and learning how to build training curricula!
Q: What do you enjoy about the College of Education?
A: I chose my major because I knew I wanted to go into the HR field, but I was struggling to find a people-focused fit in other colleges. What made me choose Education, and ultimately Illinois, was the deep dive into Human Resource Development that is not typically available to undergrads. This unicorn of a major has propelled my career trajectory in ways that I could not have foreseen when I chose the major in high school!
Q: Do you have a favorite professor or course? Why?
A: I loved the class I took with Dr. Rhubec! She really personifies the HRD professional I want to become, and I love the people-first mentality that she’s displayed in her classes that I want to reflect in the workforce!
Q: What do you enjoy about your campus experience so far?
A: I love the community I have found and all the opportunities and resources for personal and professional development.
Q: What is a fun fact about yourself?
A: I am a big foodie! My favorite restaurant on campus right now is Dubai Grill on Gregory St.
Q: Tell us about your future career plans after graduating and why you want to pursue that field.
A: After I graduate, I hope to become an HR representative that works on developing my organization into a learning organization. I would like to assist in working toward a more positive culture in whichever organization I work for. I hope to change people’s negative perceptions of the HR function and be a force that advocates for my employees!
