In middle school, Nancy had no idea what college was. But after one of her teachers inspired her to be an educator, she learned about Big Ten schools and Illinois.
Today, Nancy is a Senior Golden Apple Scholar and president of Golden Apple Illini. She has also worked as a tutor with America Reads/America Counts.
As a future Latina math teacher, Nancy hopes to serve as a role model for those who cannot envision themselves in a higher world because of stigmas in society.
Nancy was the recipient of the 2018 Jennifer Jones Alexander Scholarship. She said the scholarship lifted a huge weight off her shoulders.
"As a first-generation college student from a Chicago Public School, I never thought I would be where I am today... Thanks to this scholarship I will be able to finish off my undergraduate career strong and prepare myself to be the best teacher I can be to help inner city students like myself to reach higher education."
