October is domestic violence awareness month, here is a brief synopsis of the national issue and resources to help us combat this problem as a community. Please share these resources with loved ones and those in need.
Intimate partner violence includes stalking, psychological antagonism, and sexual/physical violence. There is an indirect correlation between academic attainment and intimate partner violence. Abuse as a child is closely linked with perpetuating abuse in a domestic violence situation. (Huecker, King, Jordan, & Smock, 2022)
According to the National Child Traumatic Stress Network, an average of 20 people experience physical harm by intimate partners every minute totaling approximately 10 million abuse victims annually. An important sequela of intimate partner violence is child exposure as well as possible long-term psychological, academic, and social effects for both the victim and their children. One-third of women and a quarter of men are affected by intimate partner violence.
